Marnet Actions
Network
This activity will involve the formation of the Marnet Marine Socio-Economic Network.
The Network will facilitate greater collaboration and knowledge exchange between marine socio economists, policy officers as well as Local and Regional Authorities, throughout the Atlantic Area.
A formal network Charter will set out the scope and purpose of the Network. The creation of the network will also enable network members to explore ongoing funding opportunities, such as Horizon 2020 and European Territorial Co-operation (ETC) opportunities.
The network will also help to develop practical initiatives in the Atlantic regions and enable the creation of strategic partnerships.
Framework
The Framework Development Action will involve the development of an agreed methodology for the identification, collection and classification of socio-economic data related to marine activities in the Atlantic Area. The approach taken in identifying and measuring relevant marine economic and social activity in Atlantic Regions will be to:
- Define the industries that are in the marine economy of the Atlantic Area
- Identify the marine sub-sectors for which there is publicly available data (mostly using the NACE code sector classification system)
- Identify the types of data that regional authorities require and in what format
- Estimate the proportion of economic activity in each region that is marine-based
- Establish which sectors and what data types would provide the most instructive indicators of marine social and economic wellbeing
- Decide on the geographical coverage in which the marine regions will be documented in terms of local maritime activities or employment
More Information
Indicators
The goal of this activity is to develop a suite of Marine Socio-Economic Indicators for the European Atlantic Periphery.
This will be achieved through the collection of information identified under the Framework Development activity and using an agreed data collection strategy.
Each partner will employ a Research intern to help compile and analyse the data. These interns will receive training on the data gathering/compilation process procedure.
The data gathered will feed into subsequent actions, specifically the construction of the Atlas of Marine Socio Economic Indicators and the implementation of practical initiatives in each region.
Atlas
The goal of this activity is to generate an Atlas of Marine Socio-Economic Indicators in Atlantic Regions.
The atlas will be made available online and will be usable at different spatial scales which will have been decided upon at the data collection stage.
The Marine Socio-Economic Indicators Atlas will be available for the benefit of Socio Economic Researchers, Policy workers as well as Regional and Local Authorities.
Practical Initiatives
The purpose of the Practical Initiatives action is to allow each region to undertake a practical application of the marine socio-economic database with the active engagement of regional and marine stakeholders.
Specifically Partners will: -
- Undertake the practical work utilising the database (e.g., identification of marine sectors in specific areas with potential for further economic development) and publish the results
- Increase awareness of the availability and utility of the marine socio-economic database and
- Identify, through practical usage, further data requirements and elaborations of the database for further development
